Antioxidant Supplements – Take Them Or Go Natural?

Should antioxidant supplements be part of your diet? With the amount of foods from which you can get your antioxidants, it might not seem a wise decision to spend any extra money on supplements to get just that little more vitamins or carotenoids. After all, why can’t we just buy more healthy fruits and vegetables which can be used to supplement our daily antioxidant intake?
Now, the problem is that there is practically a mind boggling variety of fruits and vegetables and other foods around which have different types of antioxidants that might benefit our bodies. How do we know which fruit contains a particular vitamin that we need, and it becomes incredibly tedious to keep track. Not to mention most people would not bother.
That is one case for antioxidant supplements. Supplements are sold based on a particular antioxidant. They provide convenience and quick access. Say if you wanted a particular substance that is available in pine bark extract. You do not go out to buy a pine tree and shed its bark. You buy packaged pine bark extract and use it to supplement your diet.
It is also the exact same reason why these things are called supplements. While you should always eat natural foods as a priority, it is a known fact that not many of us eat enough natural foods to get the optimum amount of antioxidants we need to combat free radicals sufficiently. Thus the necessity to purchase some amount of supplements that can be used to top up or balance our diet for maximum effectiveness in free radical eradication.
Thus, the case for discussion is not whether we should use antioxidant supplements at all, and rely solely or as much as possible on natural foods for our supply of antioxidants. There is no guarantee that we will get enough of that from fruits, vegetables and even fish. But knowing that we can supplement that with additional intake of bottled vitamins and other antioxidants, it makes our lives much healthier and provides greater overall protection. With that, the argument whether or not to consume antioxidant supplements as part of our daily routines is simply a no-contest.
